I love my home, the privacy it’s four acres provide, and the memories of building it with my husband over twenty years ago are very precious. Why would I consider moving?
My husband Roger died at home from cancer more than 10 years ago. I remain so grateful we could be in our home. Our five daughters tag teamed and one was almost always here making the last few months of his life surprisingly rich. Even with their help I was a full-time nurse, caregiver, and physical therapist. I know I do not want them to have to drop everything to care for me as I become less physically able. Already my home is much larger than I want to care for, the land with its orchard, creek, and gardens would happily embrace another family. No, I don’t need to leave this year or next year but I know that soon a move will eliminate many concerns.
I also think about our community. Many of us had jobs or businesses that allowed us to buy a home and enjoy all that Humboldt has to offer. If we leave the area as we age not only do we lose our friends and connections here, but Humboldt also loses our volunteer time, our tax base, and so many other things we contribute. Somehow it doesn’t seem fair or fun to pick up and take all that we have gained
