Ann Lindsay MD was Humboldt County Public Health Officer from 1993 to 2011. She and her husband, Alan Glaseroff MD, shared a family practice in Arcata for 28 years and raised their two children here. They were recruited to Stanford University in 2011 to establish a primary care clinic for Stanford employees and dependents and their families who have multiple chronic health conditions. The clinic was able to improve care, lower costs and achieve top rankings in patient satisfaction with adoption of a new model of team care. The lure of life in Humboldt brought them back north in 2017. They cherish the fabulous community of people here and the natural beauty.
Why Life Plan Humboldt is Important To Me
As a family practitioner in Arcata, I made home visits to elderly patients, some living alone in their two or three bedroom home having outlived their family. I was struck by the profound social isolation they experienced, even with a helper coming into their home. This type of “aging in place” did not seem appealing to me. In 1974 I had visited a new Kendal life plan community in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. I was impressed that it resembled a college campus for elders, fun and stimulating. Once you move to a life plan community you can “age in place” surrounded by friends, activities and supportive services. I could live to be 100, so I realized I better get set. Since there is no life plan community within 200 miles of Humboldt County, I got busy working on a local offering, Life Plan Humboldt, so I can stay in Humboldt for the rest of my life and thrive.
